Penarth MP Stephen Doughty has paid tribute to Sir David Amess, the MP who was killed on Friday in his constituency.

The Conservative MP was meeting with constituents in Southend West, when the attack happened on 15 October.

Cowbridge MP Alun Cairns described Sir David as "first class" and "one of the best campaigners".

"It is so sad that my good friend and great colleague, Sir David Amess, was tragically killed.

"He was a first class politician. One of the best campaigners on behalf of constituents. Passionate about championing their causes and resolving their problems.

"This is a sad and tragic end to the services of an extremely effective and diligent Member of Parliament. This again reminds me of the words of Jo Cox who said 'we are far more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us'.

"My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends."

On Monday, MPs took part in a two-minute's silence in the House of Commons, followed by tributes and a service at St Margaret's Church, next to Parliament.

Over the weekend, tributes to Sir David Amess have poured in with many praising his character and committment to causes.
