A survey has revealed a majority of participants are not in agreement with the current proposal to build a supermarket on the former cattle market site at The Butts.
The survey had 700 responses, of which 93% (651 votes) said "no" to the question 'are you happy with the plans to build a new supermarket on the old cattle market site?'
A Facebook group called 'No to a supermarket on Cowbridge Cattle market site' shared the survey, which was devised after a meeting hosted by local MP Alun Cairns, with business people, the Chamber of Trade and the Town Council.
The survey organisers say they have also received over 315 ideas of what should be put on the old cattle market site.
Nub News readers suggested the land could be used for a new school, community rooms or housing, saying there were already enough food shops in town.
Others did however agree with the Council's proposals, saying it would bring more choice, employment and a new car park.
Another meeting will be held to discuss the survey results and next steps.
Welsh Conservative leader Andrew RT Davies MS has responded to the groups' outreach, confirming he is against the proposal to build a supermarket on the old cattle market site.
Jane Hutt MS said: "Cowbridge Market has always been a key feature of this historic town in the Vale of Glamorgan.
"I have supported a number of community enterprise, and partnership proposals to secure the long term future of the market for all those who have an interest.
"This includes farming, chamber of trade and businesses which are the heartbeat of the Town. Proposals for a Community Hub, market space and car parking for businesses and visitors have been supported locally.
"Consultation about the latest plans is vital and I am grateful for the feedback from key people in the Chamber of Trade and local community who have raised strong objections to the current proposals.
"I will be meeting with the Vale of Glamorgan Council to raise the concerns of my constituents to find a viable and sustainable way forward that will benefit Cowbridge."
In a letter responding to Mr Cairns' objection, Vale of Glamorgan Council leader Neil Moore said there was an "unprecedented need to support and create new jobs" to "strengthen the retail offer of our towns", which the current proposals do.
"The council proposes to therefore market and dispose the former livestock market site for a food retail development and associated car parking, to raise a vital capital receipt to fund the comprehensive regeneration of the Vale of Glamorgan councils land on both sides of The Butts," wrote Cllr Moore.
"Furthermore, as was made clear in the report to cabinet of 8th of February 2021, any food retail development proposal will be subject to the statutory consents.
"Hence, community consultation will obviously be undertaken as part of the planning application process by the preferred developer in due course and new food retail store will be required to complement the retail offer of existing local businesses."
