A Cowbridge farm is hosting indoor Christmas market, where local craft workers can exhibit their wares.

Penllyn Estate Farm will host the market from 12-20 December inside a marquee, where visitors will be able to buy from a range of local independent businesses.

Visitors will also be able to purchase items from Forage Farm shop, which opened in June, eat at the restaurant which opened in October before the firebreak, and visit the farm's Christmas shop, which opened on 9 November.

"We were going to have a very exciting live show in this marquee that we've got because we're associated with all the local agricultural shows," John Homfray, managing director of Penllyn Estate Farm told Nub News.

"We're going to have this Christmas event but it's just not viable with all the restrictions.

"So, we thought 'what the hell are we going to do with this tent?'

"We thought we could get craft people in and they can display their wares and we can get some collateral footfall in the farm shop and restaurant. We can feed each other," he said.

John posted to various Facebook groups advertising for crafters to apply for a stall, and was overwhelmed by the number of applications.

"We've had hoards, it's extraordinary. Far more than you could have ever of thought possible," said John.

"We're really pleased, and we're thinking we might divide them into two, and have one set do one weekend and a few days, and the others do the other weekend and days."

There are between 16 and 20 stalls available, and the farm aims to respond to all applicants by 25 November.

John told Nub News that the farm was going "with the spirit of restrictions": "God knows if a Christmas market is of any value to anyone, but let's give it a go.

"I don't know if we're one step ahead, or perhaps behind the latest restrictions, but you can work with them to not be necessarily be boxed in by them.

"You have to keep on trying everything and see what works and build on that. It's all go go go," he said.

John also hoped that the market would encourage people to shop local: "I think people like to know that stuff has a local provenance, and that they're supporting each other.

"Maybe it's something that will last post-Covid," he said.
