A town councillor is urging residents of Cowbridge and surrounding areas to take action against speeding and join a community speed watch group.
Cllr Andrew Pritchard, town councillor for Aberthin, is seeking more volunteers to join the Go Safe group to help control the issue of speeding cars in Cowbridge and the neighbouring villages.
Go Safe has been set up in partnership with South Wales Police. "There are members of the community who complain about the speeds of motorists through our town but are unwilling to take any action themselves," said Cllr Pritchard.
"We are desperately short of volunteers and through this shortage we cannot go out ourselves on a regular basis. When we do go out, we usually meet in Aberthin where we will spend half an hour and we travel then to Primrose Hill where we do another half hour."
Cllr Pritchard is usually joined by one resident of Primrose Hill. "They give us a lot of their time and I can only spend limited time out and about. There are volunteers in Aberthin, but again, they can only spend limited time with the group."
Currently, the group is allowed to operate in various locations around Cowbridge, such as Clare Garden Village, outside Cowbridge Comprehensive School, Aberthin Road, St Athan Road and The Broadshord.
"South Wales Police provide the group with codes and risk assessments for each area, but they won't go on supporting us if we cannot get out and monitor roads on a regular basis," said Cllr Pritchard.
Vetting to join the Go Safe group can take up to four weeks for prospective volunteers and information such as national insurance numbers will have to be provided for the checks.
If anyone is interested in joining the group or would like to find out more information, contact Cllr Pritchard via email: [email protected]
