Cowbridge with Llanblethian Town Council today (Wednesday, 17 January) announced an increase in the Precept for the financial year, 2024-25.
The decision to raise the Precept by £2.39 per month per Band D household reflects the additional responsibilities and initiatives undertaken by the Town Council in recent years.
A statement from the council says: "Over the past couple of years, the Cowbridge with Llanblethian Town Council has significantly expanded its involvement in community events and activities, assuming extra responsibilities that contribute to the vibrancy and spirit of the town.
"Key among these initiatives are the purchase and organisation of the Christmas Lights, Parade and Events, planned May Day celebrations, Place Planning initiatives, and the installation and maintenance of Summer Baskets throughout the town.
"These community events are integral to the cultural fabric of Cowbridge with Llanblethian, fostering a sense of community and providing residents with opportunities for shared experiences.
"The Town Council recognises the importance of these events in enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
"Over the last two years, the Town Council has undertaken substantial expenditure for the maintenance of the Town Hall. Moreover, a comprehensive programme of essential works for the Town Hall has been identified for completion over the next five years.
"The play equipment in TWT park is reaching the end of its operational life, and an initiation of a replacement program is included within the current budget.
"The Town Council's objective is to alleviate the impact of these financial commitments on the Precept by actively pursuing grants from diverse funding sources.
"The increase in the Precept is a necessary step to ensure the success of these initiatives and to maintain its assets.
"The costs associated with organising and implementing such events, as well as the ongoing maintenance and improvement of public spaces, have risen considerably.
"The Town Council has invested in expanding staff hours to manage the increased workload associated with these events and activities."
Mayor Cllr Malcolm Wilson added: "While we understand the impact that any increase in the Precept may have on residents, it is crucial to recognise that these community events and initiatives contribute significantly to the overall well-being of the town.
"The additional funds generated through the Precept increase will be dedicated to ensuring the continued success and growth of these activities, as well as maintaining community assets and the high standards of service expected by the Community.
"Cowbridge with Llanblethian Town Council remains committed to transparency and accountability in its financial decisions and will continue to manage resources effectively for the benefit of all residents."
