The Vale council has confirmed Y Bont Faen Primary School in Cowbridge will reopen to all pupils on June 7 following improvement works to the school's roof.

Initially, improvement works were expected to last 16 weeks and Key Stage 2 pupils have either been sent to Cowbridge Town Hall or South Point Primary School in Rhoose to continue their education.

An email sent on Wednesday, May 25 to all Vale councillors by Trevor Baker, head of Strategy, Community Learning and Resources at the council, said pupils will be able to return to their classrooms at the start of the new term and the school has sent a letter to all parents informing them of the news.

The email continued: "Council officers have been in daily contact with the headteacher regarding the emergency provision put in place.

"Officers have been supporting the school with the coordination and logistics with the relocation of furniture, equipment, and learning/teaching resources, and worked at pace to deliver a plan of work to facilitate the safe return of staff and pupils following the half-term break.

"Parents have been provided with a point of contact in the council to respond to their queries."

Alun Cairns MP held a public meeting on May 20 with parents, councillors and school governors to discuss the situation and the disruption to pupils' education.

He said of the June 7 opening: "While it is good news that the Vale council have progressed plans forward to minimise school disruption, parents, staff, and pupils must be reassured by the council that the school will be safe for pupils to return on June 7.

"We must see prior sight of any new risk assessment that the council will complete. The safety of children and staff is paramount and must be the main focus of this issue.

"I hope that the Vale and the contractors can satisfy these strong safety concerns prior to the pupils' return."

The email also states that roofing works are continuing to progress and are expected to complete during June, and a new suspended ceiling will be installed in the affected areas during the school summer holidays, subject to tender and approval.
