Cowbridge saw the arrival of Storm Dennis yesterday and with it waterlogged pitches, cancelled events and river levels swelling but today it is set to get worse with the Met Office announcing an amber weather warning for the area.

Overnight, Cowbridge and Wales were battered by the weather. Nearby areas have seen unprecedented flooding like the River Taff in Cardiff.

Flood Alerts have also been set for Cowbridge by Natural Resources Wales:

  • The River Thaw has had a flood alert warning since 06:40 AM, with river levels rising throughout the River Thaw which have yet to peak at Cowbridge. The Current River Thaw Level is 0.745m which is above normal for this location with rain still expected throughout the day. The most recent high for the river was 1.02m, reached on Monday 19th January 2009 at 9:00 am.
  • The River at Peterston Super Ely has a flood warning in place (flooding is expected - immediate action required). At 11:00 AM, the level at Lanelay was falling. A peak level of 2.2 metres occurred at 5 AM today. There is a 6 to 10 hour time of travel between Lanelay and Peterston Super Ely.

Local residents are advised to avoid travelling through the nearby Peterston Super Ely village (pictured above). It is accessible from the St Fagans end but not from the bottom.

Storm Dennis is expected to bring very heavy rain, flooding and disruption to travel over the weekend.

The Amber Warning now asks local residents to expect:

• Fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life

• Extensive flooding of homes and businesses is possible

• Damage to buildings and structures or building collapse might happen

• Roads may potentially close, along with bus and train service delays and cancellations and dangerous driving conditions might occur, because of spray and flooded roads

• Loss of power and other essential services, such as gas, water or mobile phone services, is possible

• Communities could be completely cut off by floodwater, perhaps for several days

This is alongside the yellow weather warning for wind which could bring:

• Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely

• Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer

• Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely

• Some short term loss of power and other services is possible

• It's likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities affected by spray and/or large waves

This yellow wind warning will now extend into Monday morning as well for Cowbridge and nearby areas.

South Wales police have said: ''Unless your journey is essential please do not travel this morning as several roads are flooded and fallen trees are also blocking some routes.''

Transport for Wales has asked passengers to check all journeys before making their way to the station.

Penarth RNLI has said: ''With very heavy rain due for South Wales a RED warning has been issued. Rivers will become treacherous and there is a risk to life in areas affected. Please do heed warnings and stay safe this weekend.''
