A GoSafe speed watch group has been set up to curb speeding motorists in the Cowbridge area.

The community speed watch group will be operating on North Road Cowbridge, Borough Close, The Broadshoard, Main Road Cowbridge, along the A4222 adjacent to the comprehensive school St Athan Road and in the village of Aberthin.

South Wales Police trained volunteers on Friday 21 May.

Last Friday (28 May) the group monitored Aberthin traffic from 8-9am, and caught a dozen speeding drivers entering the village's 30mph zone from Prisk – the fastest speed recorded was 46mph.

"All offenders have been reported and will now receive a letter from South Wales Police," said Cllr Andrew Pritchard.

"If they continue to offend and are spotted again another letter will be sent to their home or employers address. However, if they are caught a third time the offending motorist will be spoken to by the Police, which could result in a fine for driving without due care and attention.

"When the speed through the village is reduced to 20mph later this year, I am sure we will catch dozens and dozens more.

"I am also told by our training officer that if we have a lot of problems with speeding motorists, he will come along to one of our meetings with a laser to actually enforce the speed limit, and fine people there and then with a fixed penalty and three penalty points.

"Stick to the 20 or 30mph speed limits, as anything over the limit the motorist will not be able to stop in time if a child runs out in front of you."
