The Hare & Hounds Bakery opened yesterday, welcoming residents to its new site on North Road.

The team opened at 8.30am, offering a range of freshly baked breads, pastries and sandwiches.

By lunchtime many of the items had sold out and a steady queue of customers visited throughout the day.

Co-owner Sarah Watts-Jones said she was pleased with the reception so far.

"Everybody has been really excited and really responsive," said Sarah.

"This whole year has been a real learning curve. It's been difficult, but we have taken away some positives.

"If you had said to me a year ago that we'd be opening a bakery, I wouldn't have believed it!" she said.

With the current restrictions, food and drink is available for takeaway but tables are ready for when customers are allowed to sit in.

Sarah and Tom have opened the bakery alongside their pubs in Aberthin and Cardiff.

When lockdown first hit, they began selling bread and pastries from a van, loaned by a friend.

It was such a success that when the building, previously a car valet centre, came onto the market, it seemed like the right step.

"Eventually, we'd like to be open during the evenings as well, offering wine and a nice, relaxed environment," said Sarah.

In the meantime, the bakery will be open 8.30am-3.30pm Wednesday-Sunday.
