The demolition of Cowbridge Cattle Market finished this week, after the market closed on Tuesday 1 September.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council announced plans to turn the 200-year-old market into a car park in July last year.

The local authority said the lack of town centre parking was a long-standing problem and it wanted Cowbridge to be a "first class destination for shoppers and tourists".

It planned to spend £65,000 on a study into the car park's viability and the number of spaces needed.

In a cabinet meeting on 7 September 2020, it was agreed that a new scheme of £150,000 would be included into the 2020/21 capital for the Cowbridge Livestock Market Regeneration funded from the Council Building Fund reserve.

A council report said: "It is anticipated the new public car park will boost Cowbridge town centre as an important destination for shopping, tourism, leisure and business.

"The council will be available to guide Glam Marts towards other alternative locations and possible sources of grant funding if available.

"A primary aim of the project is to facilitate a master planned regeneration vision for the Cowbridge Livestock Market area including the proposed new public car park.

"The proposed public car park would be an important new asset boosting the town centre and helping it thrive in the long term as a key shopping, leisure and business centre."

The historic market provided the opportunity to sell stock directly to buyers, but now farmers face extra costs by travelling to the closest alternatives at Raglan, Carmarthen or Brecon.

The Farmer's Union of Wales noted that farmers who did not have the necessary Certificates of Competence were only allowed to transport their stock for a maximum of 65 km.

To travel over 65km requires a Certificate of Competence and also a valid transporter authorisation for short journeys, meaning those who did not meet these requirements would have to pay additional haulage costs to sell their produce.
