How proposed Parliamentary boundary changes could affect Cowbridge

The Boundary Commission for Wales has proposed that the Dinas Powys electoral ward move from the Vale of Glamorgan constituency to join Cardiff South and Penarth.

An eight-week public consultation has opened to hear feedback on the plans, which would see the total number of Welsh MPs reduced from 40 to 32.

The changes are part of the 2023 review of Parliamentary constituencies in Wales, to ensure the statutory range of electors is between 69,724 and 77,062.

The Vale of Glamorgan is the only constituency within the statutory range, with 76,508 voters in the December 2019 election.

The removal of Dinas Powys from the Vale of Glamorgan is the only proposed change for that constituency, leaving a total of 70,426 electors.

It would be comprised of the following, with the number of registered voters in each constituency:

- Baruc (6,080)

- Buttrills (4,447)

- Cadoc (7,244)

- Castleland (3,442)

- Court (3,370)

- Cowbridge (5,240)

- Dyfan (4,170)

- Gibbonsdown (3,827)

- Illtyd (6,242)

- Llandow/Ewenny (2,362)

- Llantwit Major (7,939)

- Peterston-super-Ely (1,855)

- Rhoose (5,796)

- St Athan (2,765)

- St Brides Major (2,732)

- Wenvoe (2,915)

A spokesperson for the Boundary Commission for Wales said these proposals were "the beginning, not the end" of the review process.

"These are our initial views. We look forward, during our review process, to hearing from the people of Wales on how these proposals might be amended and revised," they said.

Vale of Glamorgan MP Alun Cairns said: "This is the first step in a long process and I will naturally look closely at the proposals.

"Any changes won't be concluded until the middle of next year, at least, and much can change before that date."

The proposed changes would also mean the electoral wards of Llanrumney and Rumney are removed from the Cardiff South and Penarth constituency into the existing Cardiff Central constituency.

The initial public consultation begins today and will end on 3 November 2021.
