In our Ask The Legal Expert column we get the latest specialist advice from JCP Solicitors, which has an office in Cowbridge.

Kirsty Meech, an Associate Solicitor in the Injury Services team who ran the London Marathon this year, shares some advice on staying safe when running outside on these darker evenings.

Road runners should be extra careful during winter months and should take sensible measures to avoid injury by cars, bikes or scooters by:

Making sure traffic can see you by wearing reflective, bright clothing

Running in a safe, well-lit area where there is a wide path

Planning your route and telling people where you are going and when

you expect to be back

Using a headlamp if there are few streetlights

Not wearing headphones – you need to be able to hear an approaching hazard

Going with a running buddy if possible

A&E departments are particularly stretched in the winter and it is important not to put any extra strain on the NHS.

Here at JCP Solicitors we see a number of people every year who are dealing with sometimes life-changing injuries caused by road collisions.

This can take a huge toll on people's lives and the lives of their loved ones. It is important to remember part we play as drivers and cyclists, too, to look out for each other's welfare.
