Local author Megan Mattravers launched her children's book 'The Elephant and the Buns' in Cowbridge this weekend.

Based on the true story of a travelling menagerie that visited Cowbridge in the late 19th and early 20th Century, the book is also recounts how the Elephant & Bun Deli got its name.

The story goes that baker's wife Mary Williams fed a bun to the circus elephant. Years later, when the circus returned to town, the same elephant tried to enter the shop to help itself to a bun, reinforcing the age-old adage that elephants never forget.

There was no place more fitting than the deli itself for Megan to launch her latest work, offering sticky buns made by Jack Farrington to all who purchased a copy.

"I showed Jack the cover of the book, because we wanted them to match exactly. They are so tasty and the event has gone really well," said Megan.

"It's nice to be able to meet with young families and have those interactions."

Illustrator Owain Lewis drew the display at Elephant & Bun Deli, and balloons were provided by PinkyPonkBalloons.

After writing her first book, also inspired by a Cowbridge shop, Megan was forced to delay the launch due to Covid.

This time, she is able to hold a series of events celebrating The Elephant and the Buns, including a book reading and signing next weekend at Goodsheds.
