Cowbridge town councillors have raised their concerns over the number of cars that park on the zig-zag lines outside Greggs, potentially obstructing the pedestrian crossing.

In last week's council meeting, Councillor Pritchard said that cars parking on double yellow lines and zig zag lines outside Greggs on the high street were a safety issue.

Cllr Pritchard questioned if the area could be monitored.

"I live on the High Street here in Cowbridge, and looking out of my window everyday I can see motorists parking on double yellow lines, and on the zig-zags outside Greggs," said Cllr Pritchard.

"They're only stopping there, Madam Mayor, to pick up their takeaways from Greggs but it's a huge safety issue parking right there in front of the pedestrian crossing."

Zig-zag road markings are used to allow pedestrians a clear view of the road they are crossing.

Councillor Cox agreed that parking at this location was a problem.

"Parking on the zig zags has been a constant issue on this council," said Cllr Cox.

"At one time the police were taking action there but were short of officers. It needs police action because it's an endorsable offence.

"Our civil parking enforcers can only issue a fine, it's really down to the police to issue penalty points."

Councillor Rhys David Watkins asked if the Vale of Glamorgan camera car could be put to use to monitor the area.

Blocking pedestrian crossings is an endorsable offence: you could be issued three penalty points which stay on your driving record for four years.

The Highway Code says you must not stop on a pedestrian crossing, including the area marked by the zig-zag lines.

You must not wait or park on yellow lines during the times of operation shown on nearby time plates, according to the code.

Double yellow lines indicate waiting or parking at any time is not allowed even if there is no signage.

Mayor Sian Vaughan said the issue would be raised with the new PCSO.
