A parent of a Cowbridge Comprehensive School student says they have been "let down massively" by the school's handling of an attack on their child.

The incident occurred at the school on Thursday 6 July at around 8.20am. In footage seen by Nub News, their 15-year-old child is repeatedly struck by another pupil, before falling to the ground where he is then kicked in the stomach.

The parent, who wished to remain anonymous, says their son suffered bruising, cuts, soft tissue damage and a concussion from what the pupil has admitted was an unprovoked attack.

They criticised the school for not phoning the police or ambulance service after the incident, as per the Welsh Government guidelines following events of a serious nature.

"After numerous calls and emails, we had a meeting at 4pm. The headteacher Mrs Thomas showed up five minutes late and told us she could only stay until 4.30pm because she had another meeting, which we were really unhappy with," said the parent.

"We said that due to the severity of the incident we wanted a permanent exclusion; we don't feel our child or other children are safe if someone is capable of this kind of attack.

"But we were told the pupil had been suspended for three days, which was done before she even knew the severity of our son's injuries.

"Then we were told the school wouldn't be looking at a permanent exclusion, because if it was appealed, she wouldn't be willing to risk Cowbridge Comprehensive's reputation if it got overturned."

The parent also said that after reports the incident was filmed, a notice was issued to all classes saying that it was illegal to share the footage and anyone who had a video should delete it.

"Mrs Thomas has never asked to see the footage," said the parent.

"When we said we had a video of it we could show her, as we asked for a tougher punishment, she didn't want to see it.

"Surely as headteacher you'd want to see the footage?"

The parent took their child to A&E following the incident, and returned four days later, where he was diagnosed with 'post-traumatic concussion', which they were told could last for up to 14 days.

Their child has not returned to school since the event and South Wales Police are now conducting enquiries. The parent has since submitted official complaints to the headteacher and governors.

"My son is anxious and worried about going back. He just wants everything to go away," the parent told Nub News.

"The school didn't even tell me he was unconscious at one point, I only found out from watching a video afterwards.

"Initially Mrs Thomas pleaded to our better nature and said it would be dealt with internally. If it was a severe enough punishment, we wouldn't have involved the police."

Mrs Thomas declined to comment on the incident and the parent's complaints.

A Cowbridge Comprehensive School spokesperson said: "Cowbridge Comprehensive School cannot comment on the details of any individual disciplinary case as these are confidential.

"All cases of this type are dealt with in line with the school's disciplinary policy with full regard paid to Local Authority and Welsh Government guidance."
