REVIEW: Cowbridge Amateur Dramatics Society takes middle-management to new heights in Neville's Island

It's the team-building challenge to end all team-building challenges – but for Cowbridge Amateur Dramatics Society Neville's Island is the most apropos production to return with, after two years waiting in the wings.

The play is a big ask of its four leads: over two hours on stage with such a small cast means the actors are as exposed and vulnerable as the characters they are playing.

For Neville, Gordon, Angus and Roy, four out-of-condition businessmen whose excursion on Derwentwater goes awry, panic and disorder soon set in after a series of wrong decisions leaves them stranded with no sign of help anytime soon.

Their contrasting personalities are initially played for laughs: Gethyn Clarke plays Neville, a man too clever for his own good whose well-intentioned leadership has got the group stuck in this situation to begin with.

Luckily gullible and most likely henpecked Angus, portrayed by Anthony Murphy, has his brought just about the whole camping shop along in his backpack, itemised and stored in drybags of course.

Then there's Gordon, played by Mike Chapman. He's spent two decades climbing the career ladder and won't let you forget it. He spends most of his time on the island mocking and belittling his teammates.

Rounding off the group is Christina Philpin as Roy, the timid ornithologist who has returned to the office after a 13-month mental health break with a newfound faith. While Gordon, belligerent and relentless, makes the most noise, it's unassuming Roy who ends up being the biggest liability…

As they battle the elements to survive, the group eventually turn on each other and the play soon descends into Lord of the Files.

Together on the island, the middle-managers contend with a looming wildman, a rogue breakfast sausage and Keswick Town Council's ill-timed Bonfire Night events.
