South Wales Police are warning of a resurgence of fraudulent calls attempting to scam elderly and vulnerable residents by claiming to be a police officer.
Alun Cairns, MP for Vale of Glamorgan, shared a message from the Police Chief Inspector Tony Williams saying that three of these calls were reported yesterday, with the victims living in Cowbridge.
The victims were contacted by somebody claiming to be police officers in Brixton. They were told that somebody had attempted to use their bank cards, which the scammer said had been cloned, to buy a laptop in an Argos store.
They then asked them to contact 101 and during that call they were asked for personal details, including bank details. One victim reportedly gave £5000 to the caller.
"We are urging you to be vigilant following attempts to scam these people in Cowbridge," say South Wales Police.
"The victims became suspicious and terminated the call, before contacting South Wales Police.
"People are urged to be vigilant, and to look out for vulnerable relatives."
Anybody who suspects that they or a relative has been targeted should immediately contact 101 or contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
"The CID are currently investigating, and we will be working with the banks and engaged in community messaging and reassurance while that continues," said PCI Williams.
"In 2019 we had a spate in Penarth and Vale and eventually convicted an 18-year-old male from London who was part of an organised crime gang."
