The Vale of Glamorgan Council has agreed to build a new school building on the site of Cowbridge Comprehensive School to accommodate almost 260 children aged 3-10.

The project will see the secondary school expanding to educate 210 primary school pupils and 48 preschoolers. A total of 1,844 children will be cared for on the site.

It intends to alleviate the educational strain placed on the town by recent and proposed housing developments, including the construction of 475 homes at Darren Farm.

The Council decided to proceed with the proposal on Monday (21 December) following a public consultation which received 251 responses - 147 of which were submitted by parents.

Sixty-five percent of respondents opposed the proposal, citing education standards, the local community and travel arrangements among their concerns.

The project will cost an estimated £5.366M, funded predominantly by Section 106 funds.

Cllr Lis Burnett, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Education, proposed the report. No councillors voiced their objection.

Cllr Ben Gray, Cabinet Member for Social Care and Health, commented:

"It certainly was a very comprehensive report and we all took time to digest the range of responses and the information contained.

There's always going to be a range of opinions - education establishments are always hot topics for people who have an interest in the community," he added.

"I am absolutely happy to support the recommendations and feel lots of the practical issues can be ironed out."
