Keep Cowbridge Special, the campaign group against the plans to build a supermarket on the former cattle market site, has launched a petition against the development.

The group says the petition is designed to stop the Vale of Glamorgan Council development which "would severely damage the independent traders on Cowbridge High Street and further add to the pressures of parking in the town".

"This is a community led campaign with the aim to put pressure on the Council to drop these damaging plans," says the group.

"Ultimately, the campaign aim is to preserve the heritage of our town and Keep Cowbridge Special!"

Mandy Davis is now coordinating the opposing efforts, and regular public meetings are held via Zoom.

The group says that more parking is needed in Cowbridge, and the land the Council is proposing to use is the last remaining space that could meet the demands.

Vale of Glamorgan Council Leader Neil Moore previously wrote a letter in response to MP Alun Cairns, assuring that a retail impact assessment will be carried out before any plans go ahead.

"Following on from the success of the trust scheme, we are keen to pursue the next stage of the comprehensive regeneration of this area aimed at redeveloping the former livestock market site and physical enhancing the car park and areas alongside the town wall," wrote Cllr Moore.

"This will create the opportunity to positively transform this part of the town centre and enhance the setting of the town wall.

"The medium sized food retailer would include an on-site car park, which we will require to offer free parking for two hours and as stated we are also committed to reinvesting monies raised from the sale of the main site to facilitate a quality landscaped enhanced car park alongside the town wall.

"This project will therefore result in much improved landscaped parking areas.

"An emphasis will be placed on an imaginative and sympathetically designed master planned development scheme that must protect and enhance the conservation area and convey a strong sense of place hence, subject to assessment and community consultation as part of a future planning application, if viable the delivery of a medium size food retail store at this central sustainable location combined with improved car parking will positively transform this area."
