The Vale of Glamorgan cabinet will hear and decide on plans for experimental changes to the speed limit in Aberthin next Monday [21 June].

A report describing how a 20mph scheme would be implemented through the village recommends that the cabinet approves the proposals.

It is proposed to commence from July this year and for the experimental orders to be in place for up to 18 months.

Objections and comments from the public will be accepted during the first 6 months of the trials and a further report on the outcomes of the experiments will be go before Cabinet within the 18 month period.

"The scheme does not require physical traffic calming measures such as speed humps or cushions," reads the report.

"The schemes would generally comprise, gateways, rumble strips, 20MPH signage, speed activated signs and highway markings subject to final design.

"Vehicle speeds and traffic volumes will be assessed prior to implementation and continually monitored during the proposed experimental phase of 20 mph speed limit."

Aberthin residents previously called for a reduced speed and traffic controls, citing a sharp bend, poor visibility for vehicles pulling out of Downs View Close, and a narrow pavement among their concerns about the speed.

Together they wrote over 30 letters to the Vale Council asking for change.

Ward councillor Andrew Pritchard said: "It looks as if we got much more than we asked for we have achieved a 20MPH for all of Aberthin and a 30MPH buffer zone beyond Aberthin towards the City.

"It's fantastic news for the residents of Aberthin and well worth campaigning for.

"Thanks to the residents of Aberthin who wrote letters to the council that accomplished this action for the future safety of the village."
