Alun Cairns MP has today (June 7) issued a statement explaining his reasons for backing the PM Boris Johnson.
It comes after Mr Johnson won the confidence of the Conservative Party yesterday evening with 211 votes, but 41% of Tory MPs voted to have him removed.
This means Mr Johnson will not face another leadership challenge for at least the next 12 months.
Mr Cairns said: "I understand the public concern over recent events and the contents of Sue Gray's report.
"I was equally disappointed and angry – particularly in considering the sacrifices we all made. I have met the Prime Minister personally to discuss the matters and challenged him on the issues you and others have raised, along with the widespread anger.
"In that meeting, he explained the context and circumstances. When I challenged the situation around his fine, he advised me that at the time he was sure that it would be classed as a work gathering, which would have fallen within the regulations.
"He re-stated his apology and I have chosen to accept it. The Police will have looked at the other reported incidents and presumably concluded that no offence was committed.
"I recognise that you may not have accepted his apology or even explanation in the way I have. This is a difficult judgement but having heard the explanation and questioned his statements, I hope you will respect my decision, in the same way, I respect your opinion."
