A new CCTV network is set to be installed in Cowbridge as part of a new initiative by the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

The CCTV upgrade is part of a joint agreement with Cardiff Council, South Wales Police, and the crime commissioner and was approved by the council's cabinet on Monday (March 14).

Areas such as Barry, Penarth, and Llantwit Major, as well as new cameras on King Square in Barry and Penarth Esplanade will also be installed.

Cameras will be monitored 24/7 across the Vale through a collaboration with Cardiff Council and additional viewing will be introduced at Barry Police Station.

This will allow the council and South Wales Police to quickly respond to any issues.

Cllr Eddie Williams, cabinet member for Legal, Regulatory and Planning Services, said: "An effective CCTV system is an important part of keeping people safe in the modern world.

"Such an operation can help identify the perpetrators of a crime, but more importantly act as a deterrent, discouraging peoples from committing such offences in the first place.

"The Vale remains an extremely safe place to live. We hope that implementing this new service, in partnership with Cardiff Council and the police, will help keep it that way."

Funding will be spent on upgrading existing cameras, installing new ones, and upgrading or replacing the monitoring equipment and the entire infrastructure that sits behind the CCTV service.

The cameras will be monitored by Cardiff Council within their existing Control Centre, which will also be upgraded throughout the year.
