Couple raise money for Stand Up To Cancer by running 222 miles "virtually" across South Wales

By Ellyn Wright 26th Oct 2020

A couple are running a total of 222 miles around South Wales to raise money for Stand Up To Cancer.

Paul Williams, who lives in Caerphilly, works as an area stock driver for Cancer Research for South Wales and the borders.

Along with his girlfriend Hannah Brown, Paul is running approximately 7 miles a day, virtually visiting every Cancer Research shop in South Wales.

"We planned to run between Cancer Research shops in the area," said Paul.

"But obviously we were restricted by local lockdowns, and now the national restrictions.

"So instead we're running around our home town and ticking off each shop once we run the equivalent distance."

Paul and Hannah crossed Cowbridge off their list on October 18, but still had approximately 128 miles to go.

They will complete the full 222 miles on Saturday 31 October, one week into the national lockdown.

"We'll definitely be using that second week to recover from it all," said Paul.

"We've been running every day after a day at work, whilst also doing normal things like cooking dinner and walking the dog, so it's been hard to squeeze it into our evenings.

"The hardest part is definitely the mental aspect of it all. Just pushing yourself to keep going even when you're drained every night," he said.

Paul and Hannah set a target of raising £300 for Stand Up To Cancer, but have already raised £765, more than double what they set out to do.

The money they raise will go towards turning scientific breakthroughs into treatments and cures for cancer patients.
