Cowbridge Comprehensive school has received an 'excellent' rating across the board in their latest Estyn inspection.

The report cited the 'strong, assured leadership, careful curriculum planning and consistently effective teaching to educate and inspire young people.'

Mrs Thomas, the headteacher, told Nub News: ''We are delighted that HMI Estyn have recognised the collective work of our pupils and staff as being excellent in all areas and that there are no recommendations for overall improvements.''

The report also discussed the hard work of the pupils. It said: ''Nearly all pupils display highly positive attitudes to their learning.

''They are enthusiastic, resourceful and independent learners.''

In September 2017, new arrangements for Estyn's inspections of schools came into effect.'

The new framework means that schools are judged under 5 inspection areas:

  1. Standards
  2. Wellbeing and attitudes to learning
  3. Teaching and learning experiences
  4. Care, support and guidance
  5. Leadership and management

And, schools are judged using a 4 point scale:
  • Excellent – Very strong, sustained performance and practice
  • Good – Strong features, although minor aspects may require improvement
  • Adequate and needs improvement – Strengths outweigh weaknesses, but important aspects require improvement
• Unsatisfactory and needs urgent improvement - Important weaknesses outweigh strengths

Cowbridge Comprehensive received the highest ranking in all of these inspection areas.

No areas of recommendation have been made following the inspection.

The next step for the school is to draw up an action plan that shows how they are going to maintain their high standards and quality of provision.

Estyn will also invite the school to prepare a case study on its work in relation to sustaining excellence, for dissemination on Estyn's website.
