THE Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council has been awarded an OBE in the Queen's New Year's honours in recognition of more than three decades of public service.

Cllr Neil Moore, who represents the Cadoc ward in Barry, was given the honour for services to the community in the Vale of Glamorgan.

First elected 33 years ago to what was then the Barry Borough Council in 1988, Cllr Moore is one of just 1,278 people across the UK to receive an honour and will accept it in an investiture ceremony from a member of the Royal family.

He is currently in his second period as Leader of the Council, having taken on the role in May 2019 as part of a coalition with Labour, Vale Independents and Llantwit First Groups.

"I can't think of anyone more deserving of recognition," said Cllr Lis Burnett, Deputy Leader of the Council.

"Neil's dedication and commitment to the Vale and its residents is absolute. He has battled relentlessly for the Vale at all levels of government over many years but always with respect, honesty and often a touch of humour.

"It is this rare talent that has enabled him to build partnerships with political opponents and allies across the Vale and beyond to ensure the stability and strength of our public services.

"Something that has been so vital over the past two years."

Responding to the news, Vale of Glamorgan Council Managing Director, Rob Thomas, said: "On behalf of the Vale of Glamorgan Council staff I congratulate Cllr Moore on receiving the honour of Order of the British Empire.

"An OBE is a fitting recognition of a life devoted to community and public service. Neil's is greatly deserved."
