Cowbridge residents have taken to social media to voice their views on a pre-application notice for plans to build 105 new homes in the town.

Yesterday, Cowbridge Nub News reported on the notice for housing to be developed on the greenfield site west of Windmill Lane and we attempted to make contact with Redrow Homes, the building firm behind the development.

We have now received a response from Redrow Homes. Wayne Rees, land director for Redrow in South Wales, said: "Working on our behalf, planning consultants RPS have begun the consultation process for a new development of 105 family homes on 10 acres of land off Windmill Lane.

"This is a site that has been allocated for development in the Vale of Glamorgan Local Development Plan. It is very early days but we hope to submit a full planning application this summer with a view to bringing our distinctive Heritage collection to Cowbridge in 2023."

Plans outline that 40% of the homes will be allocated to affordable housing, but residents have raised concerns about how much these homes will be, in addition to the proposed access from busy St Athan Road and the size of the development.

Rhian Basten commented on Facebook: "Unnecessary. Especially with Clare Gardens and the Girls' Grammar School developments. As this and Clare Gardens are on a hill, people will use cars if they want to shop locally putting further pressure on already difficult parking."

Lyndon Clack added: "If one of the major house builders has invested time and money in this development then it's 99% a done deal. What they don't factor in is the strain on local services that will affect the community. As far as affordable is concerned, building materials have rocketed in price along with build costs so how can they be 'affordable'?"

However, some locals have shown support for the Redrow Homes project, including Alice Maxwell. She said: "105? In most places it's 100s. St Athan is smaller with less schools, etc and has had more. Houses are desperately needed."

Lauren Catherine also commented: "I can't imagine they will actually be affordable…. But if they [Redrow Homes] have to build there, it would be nice to have houses, where people who grew up here, could actually afford to buy and stay within the community."

All responses must be sent by Friday, July 15.
