The annual duck race at Y Bont Faen Primary School in Cowbridge is set to return on July 1 and is looking for local business sponsors.

For the first time, the duck race is open to the Cowbridge community to participate and the school's PTA is hoping to attract local businesses to raise money for a pizza oven to be installed in the school's outdoor kitchen.

Sophie Riddell, secretary of the school's PTA, told Cowbridge Nub News: "It's been running for quite some time but this year, we wanted to boost engagement between the school and the community which has taken a massive hit with Covid."

The duck race is usually a closed event just for the school's pupils, but this year the PTA decided to open participation to the Cowbridge community to help build connections. "Children are able to buy the ducks for £1 each and local businesses can sponsor bigger ducks," said Sophie.

Sponsorship will cost £50 and company logos will also be printed on the side of the ducks. Businesses that decide to sponsor a duck will also have their logo displayed on a board outside the school.

The ducks will be released from the bridge by Filco Supermarket into the River Thaw at 15:10 and all ducks will be collected towards the bottom by Twt Park. "We're hoping to make this a really fun event and get people from the school and the town to work together," said Sophie.

The money raised from the duck race will go to building an outdoor pizza oven to be fitted within the school's outdoor kitchen, and the target for this year's race is to raise £800.

Any extra money will be used to buy more equipment for the outdoor kitchen.
