Schools in Cowbridge have joined forces with the Vale of Glamorgan Council to take part in activities to raise funds for Ukraine.

Llangan Primary School, Ysgol Iolo Morganwg and Cowbridge Comprehensive School have joined other schools across the Vale and responded to the distressing scenes.

Students and staff have organised fundraising events including cake sales, sponsored cycle rides, donation collections, wrist band sales, sponsored silences, and blue and yellow themed clothing days.

A total of 14 schools have raised £10,357 for the cause.

Staff from the Vale of Glamorgan Council have also been busy completing Miles for Ukraine, a 1,775-mile virtual journey to the country from the Civic Offices in Barry.

Since March 16, staff members have been busy walking, running, cycling and even knitting their way to Ukraine in an effort to raise money via a JustGiving page set up for the campaign.

To date, £1,584 has been raised. On April 5, the 1,775-mile target was achieved, and the new challenge became making the return journey back to Barry.

The council has travelled a total of 2,337.34 miles, with 1,212 miles to go.

Rob Thomas, chief executive of Vale of Glamorgan Council, said: "The horrifying events in Ukraine have united so many in the Vale in a desire to help the humanitarian crisis.

"The huge effort of schools and council employees to coordinate fundraising and collections in such a short space of time is astounding, not to mention the generosity of the many residents that have donated money to the cause.

"I hope that we can continue the fantastic momentum built up so far over the coming weeks!"

The money raised by the schools and council will be donated to the Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.
