Cowbridge: The Food Collective still taking orders until midnight closing
Fresh local produce from artisan cakes to eggs, milk and meat is still available to purchase from The Food Collective website until midnight tonight.
Myfanwy Edwards, who runs The Food Collective and is secretary of the Cowbridge Farmers' Market, set up the website five years ago and came up with the idea of an online presence to attract more people outside of the weekly market.
"It's basically an online version of the farmers' market," says Myfanwy. "It's for those who can't come to the market on Saturday morning.
"They can go online and all the producers are offering their food for sale. Just pop it in your basket and, whether you buy from one producer or 20 producers, you just make one payment to the website."
When Myfanwy first set up The Food Collective, customers could meet the producers when collecting their food at Cowbridge Town Hall. But when COVID-19 struck, the operation drastically changed overnight.
As a result, The Food Collective is now run as a box scheme, where producers drop their items to Myfanwy to be boxed up, then customers can pick up their orders from the Arthur John Car Park. "It's really quick, efficient and contactless," says Myfanwy.
"We experienced a huge boom in at the start of the pandemic as people were still able to get good, local food without going into shops. But it's disappointing that, now things have opened up, our sales have dropped, and people have forgotten who fed them when there was nowhere else to go!"
There are an estimated 25 producers in total, all within 30 miles of Cowbridge. The online market opens online every Saturday afternoon and stays open until midnight on Tuesday, then orders are ready to be collected from the Arthur John Car Park on Thursday evenings.
