Although lockdown rules have restricted the Poppy Appeal in Cowbridge, residents are still keen to support the cause, and are getting creative to raise money.

Elizabeth Jenner was looking for new ways to stay busy in lockdown when the idea of turning wooden spoons into commemorative pieces for Remembrance Sunday.

"The Poppy Appeal is normally massive, and is also Remembrance Sunday a really big thing for Cowbridge, so it's just sad that it isn't going to be the same," said Elizabeth.

"They're not able to sell the poppies outside the town hall, so I had an idea to decorate the spoons with poppies."

Elizabeth took up pyrography, the art of decorating wood with burn marks from a heated object, as a therapeutic hobby after discovering the technique through a friend.

"My friend was going to run classes, but had to cancel them due to Coronavirus unfortunately," she said.

"I was trying to think of new hobbies while it's pretty strange out there. In lockdown you have to find something calming to do.

"I decided to have a go by myself and needed something to practise on, so I went to Arthur John and bought some wooden spatulas."

As she practised, Elizabeth had the idea to contribute to the Poppy Appeal and went to the Royal British Legion website to download fundraising packs. She returned to Arthur John to buy more wooden spoons.

"They must have thought I was absolutely mad," said Elizabeth.

A decorated spoon costs £5, with £2 from every purchase going to the Poppy Appeal. Elizabeth spends between 45 minutes and an hour precisely engraving on each one, and is offering to personalise each one.

"Some people might like something engraved down the handle, like 'Lest We Forget', or a specific date or name," she said.

"I don't want them all to be the same, so it depends how intricate people would like them."
