Parents of children at Cylch Meithrin y Bont-faen nursery have organised a fundraiser, to raise money for vital funds.

This Saturday 10 July, at 10.30am, a group of 15 will walk five miles, from the nursery, located next to Cowbridge Leisure Centre, up to the new housing estates, around Llanblethian and back.

The event is the first fundraiser that the Welsh-medium nursery, which is a registered charity, has been able to hold in many months due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Helen Roddick, chair of the Voluntary Committee, said the £1,000 target would go towards extending the opening hours.

"Currently the nursery is open 9am-3pm, which isn't great for parents who work," she explained.

"From September we're going to open 8am-5pm. We've been asked to do this for years but haven't been able to do it because of staff availability.

"Now their children are older, this is the first year we can do it. So that takes a bit of a hit with staffing costs at first, until the service has been properly advertised and the numbers grow.

"As a registered charity, we try and keep fees as low as possible, but we haven't held any fundraising events, like everybody else, for a very long time."

Previously, fundraisers at the nursery have included an annual Tea Party and summer fair. In 2019, a gala event raised enough money to build an extension and double the space at Cylch Meithrin.

"There's been some really generous donations so far. Everyone feels like a part of the nursery, and gets involved in the fundraising," said Helen.
