In a remarkable display of resilience and determination, Gareth Petty, a patient undergoing treatment for stage 3 melanoma, has embarked on an extraordinary journey to walk the entire length of Wales.

His 180-mile trek, which began today, August 16, in Llandudno, is not only a personal challenge for Gareth but also a heartfelt mission to raise vital funds and awareness for Velindre Cancer Centre.

Gareth's life took an unexpected turn in August 2023 when he was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma after noticing a minor bleeding from a mole on his back. Since then, his treatment has involved two significant operations, and he is currently undergoing immunotherapy at Velindre Cancer Centre.

Just one year after receiving this life-altering diagnosis, Gareth decided to take on this ambitious challenge. His journey will see him walking from Llandudno to the Cross Inn, Cowbridge, where he is expected to arrive on August 25, 2024. Along the way, Gareth aims to spread awareness about melanoma, the importance of regular body checks, and the critical need for early diagnosis.

"When I was diagnosed, I wanted to turn it into something positive," Gareth explains. "This challenge is to raise awareness for melanoma, highlight the importance of regular body checks and early diagnosis, and to thank the amazing staff at the NHS and Velindre who support me through my treatment."

Gareth's journey is a testament to his strength and gratitude. By taking on this challenge, he hopes to give back to the NHS and Velindre staff who have provided exceptional care throughout his treatment. The funds raised through his walk will go directly to Velindre Cancer Centre, supporting their ongoing efforts to treat and support patients like Gareth.

As Gareth makes his way across Wales, he is not just walking for himself but for everyone affected by melanoma, hoping his story will inspire others to take action in the fight against cancer.

Those wishing to support Gareth's journey can donate to his fundraising campaign, with all proceeds going to Velindre Cancer Centre.

Updates on Gareth's progress can be followed on social media, where he is sharing his experiences and the stories of those he meets along the way.
