A village school near Cowbridge will be renamed after a controversial move that sparked protests.

Llancarfan Primary School will be renamed South Point Primary School/Ysgol Gynradd Trwyn y De when it moves from Llancarfan village to Rhoose.

The name will change from January next year when the new school building is due to be open. The school is also designing a new logo.

The Vale of Glamorgan council's cabinet approved the renaming at a meeting on Monday [13 September].

Cabinet Member for Education Lis Burnett said: "The new school building is progressing at pace. Wales' first zero-carbon in use school is an absolutely phenomenal project.

"We received a request from the headteacher and governing body of the school to change the name to reflect the new location and extended catchment area.

"Renaming the school has also been supported by the Llancarfan community council.

"The name is particularly apt because, as far as I'm aware, it's going to be the most southerly school in Wales."

Planning permission was granted for the new school building in September last year, with construction starting in December.

Controversy arose when plans to move the school from its rural Llancarfan location five miles down the road to the more urban environment on land northwest of the railway in Rhoose were announced. The school is also expanding to have places for 210 pupils.

Parents campaigning against the decision felt the move was in effect closing a rural school.

Leader of the Welsh Conservative Party Andrew RT Davies was elected to the Vale Council campaigning against the plans.

The Vale council said the school needs to cater for increasing demand in Rhoose, partly caused by the new Rhoose Point housing development.

The new school building will also be more environmentally friendly than the current building, emitting much less carbon dioxide.
