The Vale of Glamorgan Council is proposing to meet the increasing demand for school places in Cowbridge by investing in two new primary school buildings as part of a multi-phased project.
The first phase would see an investment of £7 million to double the capacity of English-medium primary places by building a new 420 place primary school building on the site of Cowbridge Comprehensive school.
As part of this project Cowbridge Comprehensive school would become an all-through 3-19 school and Y Bont-Faen primary school pupils and staff would move to the new school.
With an all-through model, pupils would automatically move from the primary to the secondary phase removing the need to apply for a secondary school place.
The Council's Cabinet will consider these proposals on 4 November and if approved a statutory consultation will begin on 18 November, offering staff, parents and residents the opportunity to respond to these proposals.
The second phase would seek to address the longer-term need for increased Welsh medium primary school places and further contribute to the Welsh Government's 'Cymraeg 2050' target of a million Welsh speakers by 2050.
The proposal, which will be considered in more detail by Cabinet at a later date, would see Ysgol Iolo Morganwg move to a new 420 place 21st century school building elsewhere in Cowbridge, as its current site does not allow for expansion.
Cllr Lis Burnett, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Education and Regeneration said:
"It is fantastic to see further investment in the future of education in the Vale of Glamorgan. We have a proven track record for delivering 21st Century school buildings that are not only fit for current purpose but also for future generations.
"If this proposal is approved, pupils in Cowbridge, whether they attend Y Bont-Faen primary school or Ysgol Iolo Morganwg will soon have access to some of the best education facilities in Wales."
More information will be released by the Council if Cabinet approve the proposals for consultation on 4 November.
