One week left to have your say on Vale's climate emergency plan to cut CO2 emissions

Local News by Ellyn Wright 6th May 2021

One week is left for the public to have their say on Vale of Glamorgan council's plan to cut carbon dioxide emissions.

The Project Zero plan includes preventing floods, installing district heating schemes, and a wider rollout of electric Nextbikes.

Declaring a climate emergency in July 2019, the council pledged to reduce its own carbon emissions and encourage others in the Vale to do so too.

The council has been asking residents for their views since March 23, and the consultation ends on Tuesday, May 11. Then the council will consider the responses before drawing up a final plan.

Rob Thomas, managing director of the Vale council, said: "Tackling climate change continues to be one of our biggest challenges. The draft plan details the steps that the council plans to take to address it.

"As an organisation, we are committed to reaching net-zero carbon by 2030. We want to lead by example, as well as help residents and partners to make positive changes."

Changes included in the final Project Zero plan could mean council staff working from home and commuting less, getting local landowners to plant trees, and tightening planning regulations to make new buildings more efficient.

Two focus groups were held last month where council bosses discussed with members of the public for an hour about the challenges of climate change and the potential actions. The first was on buildings and energy use and the second was on impact on land use.

Two more focus groups will be held next week, on Monday, May 10, and Tuesday, May 11. Both will run from 6pm to 7pm. The first will cover travel and the second waste. Spaces in the focus groups can be booked on the council's website.

Mr Thomas said: "We're asking for your views so the council can best support these changes, as well as determine if our own initiatives are ambitious enough.

"We're grateful to everyone who has shared their views so far and who has joined us on our online focus groups and would like to remind everyone that there is still time to respond."

Full details of the draft Project Zero plan and how to respond to the public consultation can be found on the council's website.
