The Vale of Glamorgan Council has submitted a planning application for flood alleviation works in Llanmaes.

A tender process will begin shortly to identify a suitable contractor, with the aim of completing the project by the summer.

Llanmaes has suffered several incidents of flooding dating back to the 1990's and anecdotal evidence suggests the problems go back even further than that.

Funded by Welsh Government, this £2 million-scheme seeks to reduce the risk of further flooding and involves:

• Constructing flood barriers and ditches to act as water storage areas.

• Road reprofiling to redirect water run-off and keep it away from properties.

• Road resurfacing and pavement reconstruction.

• Strategic landscaping to offer further water defences.

Cllr Eddie Williams, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Legal, Planning and Regulatory Services and Ward Member for Llantwit Major, said: "I and my fellow ward members, Cllrs John, Hanks and Norman, are well aware of the long-standing problems residents of Llanmaes have had with flooding.

"Addressing these issues has been a complicated process involving careful planning, but I'm hopeful we now have a design that can go a long way to preventing a repeat of previous incidents.

"A planning application has been submitted for the Llanmaes Flood Alleviation Scheme. We will also shortly be appointing a contractor to carry out the work, which we hope can be completed in the next 12 months."
