The owners of Bar 44 will be hosting an event at Cowbridge Library on April 14 to showcase their recently published Spanish cookbook.

Bar 44 Tapas y Copas: This Is Our Spain was published at the end of last year and celebrates the many flavours of Spanish cuisine with more than 100 recipes.

Visitors will get a chance to try some of the food from the book, as well as ask the owners any questions in a Q&A session. Guests will have an opportunity to make a skewer-based snack called gilda and try some Sherry samples.

Cocktails and other drinks recipes are also featured in the book, as well as travel stories from various parts of Spain.

Tom Morgan, 47, who lives in Cowbridge and co-owns Bar 44 with his brother Owen and sister Natalie, told Nub News about the book's journey: "Every January for the past ten years, when the Christmas 'lull' sets in and we've got a little bit of time on our hands, I used to say to my brother, 'Come on, let's get a book written, let's go for it.' But reality always settled back in, and the kitchen was fired up again and we never really got around to it.

"We'd already spoken to a few publishers before COVID-19 hit intending to get something published as soon as we could. When lockdown came, we had so much time on our hands, and it was the ideal time to get our book written.

"We signed a deal with Seren Books, and we then spent months and months getting the recipes together, proofing it [the book], editing, and the book was launched in the final quarter of last year."

Tom Parker Bowles, food writer and son of the Duchess of Cornwall and Matt Tebbutt, host of the BBC's Saturday Kitchen have heaped praise for the book.

The event at Cowbridge Library is a fitting time before the annual Cowbridge Food and Drink Festival on the weekend. "It's our hometown, my sister and I were also on the very first Cowbridge Food and Drink Festival committee," said Tom.

"We've got a unique bond with the festival, and we just thought it would be great to do something in conjunction with it."

The event at Cowbridge Library will run from 19:00 – 20:00 and is free to attend, but booking is essential. There will be an opportunity to buy the book and the owners will also sign copies.

You can call the library on 01446 773941 to secure a place.

Bar 44 currently has restaurants in Penarth, Bristol and Cardiff – the Cowbridge location, unfortunately, has to close its doors during the COVID-19 lockdown.
