This week we're stepping back in time to reflect on the Physic Garden.

An article by Rhodri Guest in the Gem dated 1 July 2004 announces the development of what was then an overgrown nursery into the idyllic and tranquil garden we know today.

'Development will attract thousands of visitors a year'

Planning underway for Vale Physic Garden

The former vegetable garden at the old Cowbridge Grammar School is set to be transformed into a physic garden.

The project is estimated at more than £250,000 and an outline planning application has been lodged with the Vale Council.

Listed building approval from Cadw is also needed because of the planned medicinal herb gardens of but meant to the Old Town wall.

Work on site clearance is likely to begin in the autumn as part of a two year scheme.

It is expected that the project will be split into two distinct phases covering October 2004-September 2005 and October 2005-September 2006.

Mr Dan Clayton Jones, who chairs the Physic Gardens Trust, said: "The project has the potential to attract several thousand visitors to the town annually.

"This is a truly inspiring scheme for the town – one which we hope will gain widespread public approval.

"We owe a debt of gratitude to the European committee who have offered us £140,000 so the scheme can get underway.

"Without that support we could not possibly have taken the scheme forward in the time scale envisaged."

Mr Clayton Jones continued: "When the grammar school closed, the garden fell into decay and subsequently became a tree nursery, which itself eventually became overgrown and derelict.

"Those who were schoolboys in Cowbridge, together with townspeople have fond memories of the garden as a peaceful haven, much cherished and appreciated in the community.

"This new opportunity to restore it to the status of a physic garden will touch a chord with many and delight others.

"It will form a positive link with times past as well as forming a bridge to a new future."

A public awareness exercise will be staged at old Hall gardens on Saturday, July 10 from 12 noon till 2PM over cheese and wine, when members of the public will be canvassed for expressions of interest.

Walking through the garden today, it's clear to see the project has been a success. Now the hard-working volunteers ensure the Physic Garden is a jewel in Cowbridge's crown.
