The Bush Inn cycling team has reformed, offering residents of Cowbridge, St Hilary and beyond the chance to enjoy bike rides as a social group.

The team first formed 11 years ago, Andy Hooker explained, when he first took on the historic St Hilary pub.

"It petered out a little back then," he told Nub News.

"But over lockdown, people kept asking me to restart it, so we've decided to begin again with a monthly ride.

"What became clear during lockdown is that we live in such as amazing place, and we're so lucky where we are.

"It was so nice to see people out with their families enjoying where we live instead of just disappearing on holiday."

The team meet on Sundays at The Bush Inn before embarking on a 30–40-mile cycle in the area, although Andy explained it depended on the group consensus.

"It's very easy going, it depends what everyone wants to do," he said.

"We've got coffee and cake at the pub, and then our new pizzas afterwards if we want.

"Cycling is a good way to get fit, it's a good way to see the countryside and there's also banter and lots of good fun, and a pint of beer or glass of wine.

"There's some really nice routes, and it's about enjoying it no matter what ability you are."

Before setting off, new members will be taken through safety checks and must have a helmet and back light.

"If you want to join a group of people that are going to look after, make you feel safe on the roads, this is the place to come," said Andy.

"The social side of things is great, and everyone keeps in touch with each other in a WhatsApp group for rides during the week.

"There's about 15 of us at the moment, but some weeks there might be half that out on the ride.

"We also do Sportives, which is a bit more competitive and we'll go as a team to those."

The next ride will be departing from The Bush Inn, St Hilary at 9:30am this Sunday 5 September.
