Y Bont Faen PTA are fundraising £3,000 to purchase an outdoor classroom for pupils to enjoy.

The multipurpose outdoor space could be used as a classroom, stage, and seating area.

The school's PTA Secretary Sam Tanguay hoped it would excite and engage the children.

"Learning outside creates quite positive experience for them and has been shown to have positive impact on behavior, and also on engagement. Also, it's just fun for the kids," said Sam.

"There's a need for space, for an area where children can go and be noisy, but not disturb classes in the main building.

"It has flexibility if they want to do something more creative."

The large deck area could also be utilised for the traditional Shakespeare play performed annually by Year 6 pupils.

"Last year, they couldn't do that performance, because of the COVID restrictions and this year, they haven't been able to take part in one," said Sam.

"If we have a site in school, they could put on a performance and parents could sit on the grass bank to watch. It would solve that problem."

So far, £2,330 of the £3,000 target has been raised. Half of the total funds have come from a Local Authority grant.

"We've had a really positive response since we launched on Monday," said Sam.

"There's some amazing sponsors; something that's obviously hit chord with a number of people, who have given very generous donations."

The outdoor classroom is a bespoke design by Caerphilly-based company Landscapes4Learning.
