Alun Cairns MP is inviting Ukrainian refugees and their hosts for meetings to build networks and help settle into the local community.

Ukraine guests and their hosts will meet in Llantwit Major on May 12 and Barry on May 19 at a social gathering to strengthen community connections and support settlement in the UK.

Mr Cairns will share information on local employment, education opportunities, language support and benefits advice. He has also spoken to several employers who are keen to recruit Ukrainian resettlers.

GP surgeries will be attending as well as representatives from the Citizens Advice Bureau to offer advice and support.

In a letter to the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Michael Gove, Mr Cairns said: "Having met a number of Ukraine guests, the common theme is one of initial isolation and after many heartfelt conversations to help overcome the difficulties, the immediate challenges are undoubtedly employment, transportation, language, education and health and wellbeing."

Mr Cairns met three Ukrainian women and their host who have settled in Llantwit Major, having fled from Eastern Ukraine at the start of April. They do not wish to be named due to security reasons.

He said: "It was incredibly moving to meet those who have fled the terrible conflict. I am encouraged by the immensely warm welcome they have received in the Vale of Glamorgan, but I wish their transition into life here in the UK to be as seamless as possible.

"I have therefore written to the Secretary of State to provide a first-hand account of the challenges Ukrainian families are facing. The two social gatherings I have organised aim to bring Ukrainian families together to help set up networks and to share experiences. I have no doubt that these will also raise further issues."
