Cowbridge U3A October Monthly Meeting featured “fascinating” talk about Cardiff Barrage

Members of Cowbridge U3A were entertained by a "fascinating" talk by member David Crompton about the Cardiff Barrage at the monthly general meeting at Cowbridge Town Hall on Wednesday, 12 October.

Mr Crompton was Director of Engineering Operations for Cardiff Bay Development Corporation, responsible for all infrastructure work, including the barrage, Bute Avenue, services and reclamation.

His close involvement in the scheme, from planning to completion of the Barrage, enabled him to give insight to the many aspects of a "huge project beyond the obvious engineering tasks".

Member Robin Cumbes said: "With the aid of photographs, plans, maps and diagrams he was able to explain the problems facing the Corporation and how these were overcome.
"For example, few of us would have been aware of the requirement to provide alternative wetland habitat for birds, the need to re-route the old sewage outfalls that used to discharge directly into the river Taff or the problems associated with providing access for heavy equipment, all with the backdrop of a large tidal range and river outflow.
"The Barrage project is a complex subject but was made understandable to the layperson by an expert with a professional background and experience in civil engineering in urban regeneration.
"Prior to working on the Cardiff Bay development, David's impressive resume includes work with the Greater London Council building urban motorways, and as civil engineer to London Docklands Development Corporation, responsible for the provision of new infrastructure in London Docklands."

Cowbridge U3A's next meeting will be on Wednesday, 9 November at 2pm at Cowbridge Town Hall.

Guest speaker will be Ms Deborah Elwood from the South Wales Police on the subject of "Rogue Traders". Non-members are welcome.
