Groups Unite to Save The Ely Valley

It's not often that car drivers, cyclists and walkers come together to object to a Vale Council scheme but this is happening currently, as we approach the closing date of December 23rd for objections to an unpopular proposed new road through the Ely Valley near Cowbridge.

'Our climate is in crisis, new technology is disrupting the way we think about travel itself'.

These words from Ken Skates the Welsh Government Minister for Economy and Transport has given hope to all the public interest groups that are currently objecting to Vale of Glamorgan Council's plans to spend public funds on a new road through the Ely Valley.

It is hoped that fresh approaches to travel from Welsh Government, since their declared Climate Emergency in 2019, will convince Vale Councillors that they should be protecting the Vale's green environment and especially the Ely Valley, as a clean air haven for outdoor activities such as cycling, walking and nature watching.

For drivers commuting from Cowbridge and the surrounding villages, added traffic flowing onto the A48 from M4 at Sycamore Cross is a significant and concerning outcome if the new road proceeds.

The Ely Valley, a highly valued but unprotected Special Landscape Area, is also the subject of a campaign by Coed Cadw who are working to protect the ancient woodlands that would be destroyed by the Council if they proceed with their new road proposal.

Vale Communities for Future Generations are collecting objections to the road plans and their link to object quickly can be found here. https://t.co/7VbjQyK23S?amp=1 .

A spokesperson said: "It's amazing how everyone who appreciates all that the Ely Valley has to offer and from so many interest groups, have come together to object to this new road plan.

"People from all walks of life in and around the Vale, Cowbridge, Cardiff, Bridgend, the Valleys and even further afield have stepped forward to help save the Ely Valley from an environmentally damaging road proposal."
