As the closing date for objections to the Vale of Glamorgan Council's proposal for a new road through the environmentally sensitive Ely Valley approaches, Vale Communities For Future Generations (VCFFG) has launched an appeal for lovers of the countryside, cyclists, runners, walkers, ramblers, riders and bird watchers to object to the road plan using their quick link below.

The closing date for objections is 23rd December.

A VCFFG spokesperson said: "We have all seen the news and the damage done to the countryside by HS2, especially to the ancient woodlands and rare habitats.

"We are seeing the same destruction of the environment here in the Ely Valley on a smaller scale.

"The area is a hugely popular and much loved 'green lung' for people from Cowbridge, Cardiff, Rhondda, Bridgend and further afield who want to excercise, enjoy the clean air and everything else the countryside has to offer.

"Putting an elevated major road designed for freight lorries through the valley would undoubtedly pollute the air and water courses as well as destroy ancient woodland and rare habitats."

She added: "What's the point of having ground breaking Future Generations legislation in Wales if our children can't enjoy the same undamaged green environment we have benefitted from - especially during the Covid 19 pandemic.

"Without objections there is a a real danger we will lose a huge area of natural Vale countryside for ever."

It is estimated that the road proposal, which relies on funding from the Welsh Government, will likelý cost the public purse around £100 million.
