The announcement for the closure of Cowbridge's Co-op sparked frustration amongst residents but now plans have been submitted by Savers to replace the popular local store.

Savers currently has over 450 stores, stocking a wide range of value, branded, health, home and beauty products.

They were recently voted The Sunday Times 4th Best Big Company to Work for in 2019.

A planning application has been submitted by the company which states: ''The proposed works is for a fit-out of an existing retail unit on the high street including new floor finishes, ceiling, lighting to be installed.

''Existing partitions and shopfront to be retained. The new shopfront signage, and projecting signage''

The application acknowledges that the new shop would be situated in Cowbridge's conservation area.

It states: ''The proposed works do not involve loss of any feature of historic or architectural interest to the existing units or local area, and most of the proposed works involved the retainment and utilisation of existing features.

''The existing shopfront to be retained as well as internal partitions.

''The external refurbishment proposed will freshen up the unit, with new non-illuminated signage and decoration, and will be in keeping with the high street to the benefit of the setting of the building/street scene in general.''

The Co-op in Cowbridge is due to close on March the 7th 2020.

The application is at its very early stages and a decision will be made by the Vale planning team on whether it can go forward.

Savers have been contacted for a comment.
