A number of Cowbridge residents have complained about long wait times at polling stations in town, when the queue reportedly stretched around the Town Hall building after 10pm last night.

Anyone who joined a queue to vote before 10pm yesterday was permitted to cast their ballot after polling stations close.

People took to social media to voice their frustration, with some even saying the long wait deterred them from voting.

"I've driven down to Cowbridge Town Hall twice to vote, my neighbour went down six. The queue was around the building, and seeing other people waiting 45 minutes and freezing cold," wrote one resident.

"Thank you very much organisers. For the first time in my life, I haven't voted."

Another said: "Made three attempts throughout today to vote. The queue was worse each time. I finally gave up as the queue was all the way around the town hall."

"Joined the queue at 9.00pm, got in to vote at 9.55pm and queue still around to Town Hall Square. How have cities coped?" another resident asked.

"Unfortunately, lots of people saw the length of the queue are drove off again," one claimed.

Three polling stations were set up at the Town Hall, with voters entering and exiting via a one-way system.

At midday, roughly 15 people waited in line to cast their votes. They reported waiting in line for 20-30 minutes.

A spokesperson for the Electoral Commission told Nub News: "We are aware that there were long queues yesterday, because social distancing was in place.

"Staff had to manage the number of people inside at any one time. As a result, voters may have had to wait for longer than usual.

"We offer guidance to local authorities about how to run polling stations, so any complaints about a specific polling station would need to be directed to them."

Nub News is awaiting a response from the Vale of Glamorgan Council's returning officer.
