The Welsh Government has been asked to relax restrictions on sport and activity classes based on concerns for children's mental and physical health, once current rules begin to loosen.

At Nub News we want to hear your opinions on this topic, to give a voice to people in Cowbridge.

Newport East MS John Griffiths has written to Health and Social Services Minister Vaughan Gething and the Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism Dafydd Elis-Thomas to voice concerns about how children's physical activity outside of school has been affected by the pandemic.

In his letter Mr Griffiths said that relaxing the restrictions for sport and activities for young people should be "at the top of the queue".

"Just behind that should be a much more general opening up of sport and leisure for all ages and I very much hope that Welsh Government will give this the serious consideration it warrants," wrote Mr Griffiths.

"This is because I believe sport is not just good for physical health, but also for mental health, for quality of life and general enjoyment."

Under alert level four, all leisure centres, gyms and swimming pools are closed. The Welsh Government advises that exercise should be done close to home, to reduce travel.

Parks are open but some areas such as sports courts have been closed, and children's play parks are open.

The Welsh Government's advice reads: "The benefits of outdoor play to children are significant and keeping parks and playgrounds open supports children's mental and physical health and wellbeing.

"Outdoor environments are lower risk in relation to coronavirus transmission. However, the risk cannot be eliminated, and parents and guardians are encouraged to ensure playgrounds do not get too busy, and take responsibility for social distancing."

In Scotland, organised sport and exercise for under-12s has been allowed to continue.
