Colwinston Cinema to open for film showings after 18 months

Colwinston Cinema is returning next week, for the first time in 18 months due to the pandemic.

Run by members of the community for seven years, patrons enjoy films from the village hall. Paul Roberts is one of the voluntary team members, who organises the programme of films shown at the cinema.

To mark its return, Colwinston Cinema will be showing Kevin Allen's 'La Cha Cha', a kooky caravan park rom com starring Rhys Ifans, Alfie Allen and Ruby Ashbourne Serkis.

"It's being released only a week or so before we're showing it, which is quite unusual for us," explained Paul.

"The creators are trying to promote it at independent and community cinemas in Wales, as its obviously a Welsh film. So that means we'll be one of the first cinemas to show it!

"Often one of the difficulties we have is that we don't get to show films for five or six months after they've been in the cinema, so we try to show the ones people might have missed or films nominated for the Oscars and BAFTAs."

Filmed entirely with iPhones using specialist lenses, 'La Cha Cha' follows a group of eccentrics living together on a caravan site to avoid spending their twilight years in a care home.

The cast formed a bubble on the Gower peninsula to make it, and it is clear they enjoyed their time together.

Tickets are £5 on the door for the showing at Colwinston Village Hall on 25 September, from 7.30pm.

"It's a safe environment to come out and enjoy a film," said Paul.

"We set the tables and chairs up theatre style, so there's plenty of space to social distance between groups and also at the bar."
