Ahead of hustings in Cardiff this evening, when Conservative leadership candidates Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss will outline their action plan if selected to become the next Prime Minster, a leading Vale of Glamorgan Tory says why he believes former Chancellor Mr Sunak is right for the post.

Chairman of Vale Conservatives Leighton Rowlands, who endorsed the departure of Boris Johnson, says: "I'm backing Rishi to be our next leader and Prime Minister.

"Rishi supported 63,000 Welsh businesses with loans and grants, gave support for the self-employed and protected 600,000 jobs in Wales.

"This has helped rebuild the UK Government presence in Wales."

"The UK government supported people across Wales to help with the cost of living. People have had £400 taken off their energy bills, the most vulnerable 30 per cent of families will receive £1,200 of support and that is thanks to Rishi.

"I look forward to Rishi's vision of delivering freeports in Wales, the M4 relief road and making UK government ministers more visible in Wales.

"The people of Wales do not want more Welsh Parliament (Senedd) members procrastinating. The people of Wales want politicians to focus on the cost of living and the huge waiting times in Wales in the NHS."

The two leadership contenderswill face questions from Welsh Tory members in a hustings in Cardiff later today (Wednesday, 3 August), the first time either has visited Wales since the contest began.

The new Tory leader will be declared on 5 September, and will replace Boris Johnson as prime minister.
